Description

The 3D Functional Golf Coach course empowers movement professionals to enhance golf performance by applying the principles of Applied Functional Science® in a practical, client-centered approach. Presented by Dr. Gary Gray, Doug Gray, and Dr. David Tiberio, this course redefines golf instruction by focusing not just on the swing but on the functional movement patterns that make every swing possible.

Rather than teach a "one-size-fits-all" swing, this course explores how authentic, three-dimensional movement is essential to understanding each golfer's unique biomechanics. Coaches are guided through strategies to assess, analyze, and enhance a golfer's movement capacity based on individual needs, goals, and limitations. The emphasis is on creating safe, effective, and enjoyable programs that help golfers of all ages and abilities improve their performance while minimizing injury risk.

Key concepts include:

  • Functional golf movement assessments based on the 3DMAPS® (3D Movement Analysis & Performance System)

  • Understanding the biological, physical, and behavioral dimensions of the golf swing

  • Tweakology: leveraging variables to customize movement strategies for each golfer

  • Identifying common movement compensations and providing personalized solutions

  • Training the body to optimize mobility, stability, power, and rhythm within the context of golf

  • Using transformational zones to improve swing mechanics in realistic, functional ways

The course emphasizes that the body swings the club, not the other way around. Coaches learn to look beyond technique and into the whole body’s chain reaction to create powerful and consistent results. By focusing on the authentic movement needs of golf—rather than arbitrary positions or swing styles—movement professionals will be able to guide players toward more efficient and enjoyable play.

The 3D Functional Golf Coach course integrates scientific depth with hands-on practicality, making it a valuable asset for anyone looking to support golfers at any level, from weekend warriors to competitive athletes.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply the principles of Applied Functional Science® (AFS) to analyze and enhance the three-dimensional movement patterns of the golf swing.
  • Utilize the Principle–Strategy–Technique (PST) process to design and implement individualized, functional golf performance programs.
  • Understand and integrate the 3DMAPS® foundational mobility and stability movements as the basis for effective golf-specific training.
  • Identify and train the key Transformational Zones (Address, Backswing, Impact, Finish) where mobility, stability, balance, and power are optimized.
  • Incorporate Tweakology™ and AFS Nomenclature (Driver, Environment, Load, Rate, Duration, etc.) to tailor movement programs to each golfer’s needs.
  • Coach movement and performance through the body’s key regions—feet/ankles, hips, thoracic spine, and cervical spine—to enhance chain reaction efficiency.
  • Develop and cue three-dimensional movement sequencing that improves functional power, coordination, and movement authenticity throughout the swing.
  • Demonstrate effective coaching communication and progression strategies that promote athlete confidence, engagement, and success.
  • Integrate movement science, strategy, and coaching art to improve both performance and the overall golf and life experience of every client.
